This chart shows that in the year 2000, the entire State of New Mexico consumed 128 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas and produced 1,673 bcf. The top three producing counties for natural gas in New Mexico are San Juan County with 704 bcf, Rio Arriba County with 417 bcf, and Eddy County with 299 bcf. The chart also shows that the potential gas production from Otero Mesa would only be13 bcf.

With New Mexico already producing a glut of natural gas, the potential 13 bcf from Otero Mesa is an insignificant contribution to our consumption or exportation of natural gas. Furthermore, New Mexico has an excellent potential for renewable resource development and production, which could replace the energy produced from fossil fuels, while still generating income for the State and not destroying places like Otero Mesa.
